“Where words fail, music speaks.” ― Hans Christian Andersen
So I stumbled upon this “30 Day Song Challenge” on twitter, and wasn’t sure I would be able to keep up posting 1 song a day for 30 days, nor would I know how to choose. So instead I turned it into a mixtape, and let me tell you it wasn’t easy. I started by trying to get a bunch of songs that would fit each topic, and then slowly started to whittle it down. There were over 400 songs on this playlist at one point, but finally I have the final 30-ish.
“Music is an outburst of the soul.” ― Frederick Delius
Day 1: “Black & Gold” – #GoBuffs (Enough Said!)
Day 2: “11 Blocks” – There are lots of songs with #’s in the title, but I’ve lately discovered Wrabel, and fell in love with this song, about living close to someone you used to have feelings for and how you could always run into them #StoryOfMyLife
Day 3: “Call My Name” – Something about Cheryl and this song that get me ready for summer. (Runner Up: “Super Bass”)
Day 4: “Someone That I Used To Know” – This one is dedicated to all the men in my life who have played me for a fool, ghosted on me or just made me feel like $#!t at one point or another.
Day 5: “Ready For It” – I honestly couldn’t decide between this and Justin Bieber “Beauty & a Beat” but the Taylor song fit better in the mix and was more relevant.
Day 6: “Till The World Ends” – It’s Britney Bitch!
Day 7: “Castle on The Hill” – just a catchy driving song through the back roads with the windows down.
Day 8: “Drunk Texting” – obviously… just ask my friends
Day 9: “Look What You Made Me Do” – I so wanted to hate this song… but it’s so damn good and catchy!
Day 10: “Save Me” – The power in Jordan Sparks voice in this song just make start to tear up and break down. (Runner Up: Say Something – A Great Big World & Christina Aguilera)
I need somebody’s help here
Thought it would be alright
But I’m not pulling through on my own
Is anyone around who can save me?
I’m falling down it’s crazy
If this is the pain God gave me
I’m cool with that
But won’t somebody save me?”
Day 11: “Into You” – It was a touch choice between this and “Apologize” from OneRepublic but this mixed better and is one of the best tracks from Ariana’s Dangerous Woman album.
Day 12: “Sometimes” – well when it said pre-teen I knew it had to be something from the Baby One More Time album, and I just love this song.
Day 13: “Lights” – who knew this song was released in 1978.
Day 14: “Mirrors” – Now I just need to find someone to dance with me at my wedding.
It’s like you’re my mirror
My mirror staring back at me
I couldn’t get any bigger
With anyone else beside me
And now it’s clear as this promise
That we’re making
Two reflections into one
Day 15: “Teenage Dream” – oh Glee! At the height of your popularity you released this incredible version of Katy Perry’s hit song.
Day 16: “I Want It that Way” – I mean was there really any other choice considering what I did with Day 24? (Runner Up: Back Here – BBMak)
Day 17: “Since You’ve Been Gone” – While not my go to karaoke song, this is definitely a song that will get everyone singing along with you!
Day 18: “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” – A classic and it was released just 25 days before I was born. (Runner Up: Never Gonna Give You Up #RickRoll)
Day 19: “Right Place Right Time” – A song that makes me think about life… Well if life has taught me anything the last few years, it’s all about being at the right place at the right time. And while I haven’t experienced the excitement Olly sings about with being in the right place and right time, I’m hopeful that one day I will stumble into someone and we will be in the right place at the right time.
Day 20: “Thinking Bout You” – The topic of a song that has many meanings to me was a tough one to decide upon. On the surface the song talks about missing someone while they are away, but for me the song reminds me of the memories I’ve had in my life and memories of my grandparents. Add those with all the tragedy’s around the world happening this song is a that reminds me to remember the good in life.
“Oh, I don’t have you here with me
But at least I have the memory
I try to make it through the night
But I can’t control my mind
I’m just thinkin’ bout you”
Day 21: “Marilyn Monroe” – there is something about this Nicki Minaj track that I just relate with so much to…
Yeah, I make mistakes
Sometimes I feel like I’m at the end of the road
I can get low, I can get low
Don’t know which way is up
Yeah, I can get high, I can get high
Like I could never come down
Call it a curse
Or just call me blessed
If you can’t handle my worst
You ain’t getting my best
Day 22: “Not A Bad Thing” – As a song that keeps me moving forward, somedays it’s about reminding yourself that it’s not your fault that things didn’t work out with someone…
So don’t act like it’s a bad thing to fall in love with me
Cause you might fuck around and find your dreams come true with me
Spend all your time and your money just to find out that my love was free
Day 23: “Bloodstain” – too close to home…
Thought I found the one when I was 23
And when it was done, it nearly killed me
I’ve got a little heart, not built for one night
I give it all away even when I know it isn’t right
Day 24: *NSYNC Medley (“Gone”, “Just Don’t Tell Me That”, “I Want You Back”, “Tearin’ Up My Heart”, “It’s Gonna Be Me”, “Bye Bye Bye” & “Pop”) – I mean I just had to! My favorite boy band of all time, so why not dedicate 20 minutes to some of their greatest hits!
Day 25: “Black or White” – This is one of my favorite Michael Jackson songs of all time, and I stumbled upon this remix a while ago.
Day 26: JLS Medley (“Do You Feel What I Feel” & “Take A Chance On Me”) – This JLS album deserved to be massive, and yet it never took off here in the US. But the category is a song(s) that makes me want to fall in love…. well Do You Feel What I Feel, has that Christmas-y vibe that I’m always hopeful I have someone to celebrate with and I’m always hoping that they are feeling what I feel. Take A Chance On Me is what I’m always hoping for when you aren’t at the right place or right time, sometimes it just takes courage and a chance.
Day 27: “Drowning Shadows” – A song that breaks my heart… there were a few options here (One Of These Days by Olly Murs, Say Something by A Great Big World & Christina Aguilera, and Too Good At Goodbye by Sam Smith) but this Sam Smith song strikes deep with me as he deals with loneliness which I think we all struggle at times with.
And somebody who is good for me
I’m so tired of all this searching
Do I, do I, do I, do I…
Go home to nothing or stay out for more?
Give in to someone or lock down my door?
Or drown all my shadows, drown them like before?
Day 28: “Love So Soft” – The original American Idol! Her voice is and has always been amazing, and on her newest single it’s just pure fire!
Day 29: “You’ve Got It (The Right Stuff)” – A song from my childhood?!? Well I’m pretty sure there is a VHS tape somewhere of me performing as a 2 or 3 year old to New Kids On The Block, so let’s hope that never surfaces…
Day 30: “Boys” & “Girl In The Mirror” – Category is: A Song That Reminds You Of Yourself.
I was busy thinking ’bout Boys
Whoops my ADD kicked in, so back to a song that reminds me of myself. The opening lyrics of “Girl in the Mirror” struck a cord with me. So much going on in my head, over analyzing every detail, anxiety kicking in at the worst times, and always holding it in. It’s why music is my outlet, want to know how I’m feeling check my recently played. Music is the look into my soul, and when I can’t find the words, music will do the talking for me.
You can always sense with me
When things ain’t quite right
I barely speak, I can’t seem to sit still tight
There’s many things that run and pass through my mind
It’s hard to show when you’re
The only one with your eyes
And yes I’m usually busy thinking about Boys 😉
